I think the same can be said for forests, you dont have to build in every square inch of land, if you want a larger more dense forest, then use the map editor and create it, and once you start building, dont build on that area. They'd still all work and smaller independent farm fields, but visually would look like something larger. Without fencing you could then place several farms right next to each other to make it look as if its a much larger field. I think one of the big things that would help though would be the ability to turn on or off the fencing around farm plots. I'll wait till I can play the game before I make any real judgements, but I think will a little effort farming could look just as natural in C:SL as it does in Banished.

Compare that to your average city builder like SC and CXL, and now C:SL where people tend to have quite detailed plans and ideas, and often as a result quite unnatural looking cities. Sure you do some minor planning so you don't end up with housing cutting in to your logging/forestry area, but beyond that simple level there isn't much point in planning because each map is different. One of the reasons farming looks so natural in Banished is because there is no editor and your kind of forced to lay them out in a more random fashion, your doing the building as required to fullfill you citizens needs. Sure modern cities have a lot of planning before new building takes place but they are still mixed in with other less planned aspects of the city. I think the biggest problem with so many people who play city builders is this need to over plan everything and ending up with those ugly and very unnatural cities/maps, I'm not saying your one of them, just that to make the most natural looking cities you need some randomness and not just always laying out long straight roads, and now this obsession people have with circles, it still looks too planned out to me. In my opinion, without having played the game yet, you could easily achieve the same look from Banished in C:SL.all you'd need to do is lay them out a a slightly more random fashion, I know they need to be stuck to roads but that just means also laying out your roads is a more random fashion.
